Capped column

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004151

A composite ice crystal consisting of a hexagonal column with a thin, plate-like crystal attached to one or both of its ends. These crystals form in the atmosphere when they pass through layers with different temperature and supersaturation conditions, which favor different crystal growth habits. Capped columns are one of several crystal types responsible for producing atmospheric optical phenomena like halos and sun dogs.
