Capillatus
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010421
A cloud species designation for cumulonimbus clouds that have developed a distinct fibrous or cirriform appearance in their upper portions. This feature indicates that the cloud top has reached the upper troposphere, where water droplets have frozen into ice crystals, forming an anvil-like shape. The presence of capillatus signifies a mature thunderstorm, which may produce severe weather phenomena such as heavy rain, hail, and strong winds.
