Hexagonal column

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010536

A six-sided prismatic ice crystal elongated along its hexagonal axis, which grows mainly between about -4 and -10 °C and again below about -22 °C. Randomly oriented columns produce the 22-degree and 46-degree halos, columns falling with their long axes horizontal produce tangent arcs and the circumscribed halo, and sun dogs come instead from horizontally oriented hexagonal plates. Depolarization lidar is used to detect and distinguish such crystals in cirrus.
