Arcs of Lowitz
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003604
A rare atmospheric optical phenomenon consisting of bright arcs that appear to extend from the upper and lower tangent arcs of a 22-degree halo. These arcs are formed by the refraction of sunlight through hexagonal ice crystals in the atmosphere, specifically those oriented with their principal axes horizontal and rotating about that axis. They are often observed in conjunction with other halo phenomena.
