46° lateral arcs

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003166

Rare optical phenomena appearing as arcs of light on either side of the sun or moon, tangent to the 46° halo. They are formed by the refraction of light through ice crystals in the atmosphere, specifically through faces oriented at 90 degrees to each other. Their appearance is dependent on the specific orientation and shape of hexagonal ice crystals.
