A tapering, pointed spike of ice formed when water drips slowly and freezes as it falls or runs off an object in sub-freezing temperatures. The formation typically occurs on overhangs, eaves, or branches where meltwater is exposed to cold air. Icicles can vary greatly in length and thickness depending on the rate of dripping and ambient temperature.
