Langmuir layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006867
The uppermost layer of a body of water, such as an ocean or lake, characterized by a wind-driven helical circulation pattern known as Langmuir circulation. This circulation organizes the flow into pairs of counter-rotating vortices aligned roughly with the wind direction, leading to surface convergence and divergence zones. These zones are often visible as parallel streaks of foam, seaweed, or debris on the water's surface.
