An open channel or fracture in a sea ice cover, exposing the underlying water surface to the atmosphere. Leads form due to divergent ice motion or shear stresses, allowing for direct heat and moisture exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere. These features are a primary location for new ice formation and contribute to regional heat budgets in polar regions.
