Polyn'ya
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008053
An area of open water surrounded by sea ice, occurring in polar regions during months of extensive ice cover. Polynyas are maintained through two primary mechanisms: persistent winds that drive ice away from a fixed boundary like a coastline, or the upwelling of warmer, deeper ocean water that melts the ice from beneath. These features create a large, localized flux of heat and moisture from the ocean to the cold polar atmosphere.
