Polar frontal zone

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008020

A broad, three-dimensional transition region in the mid-latitudes, typically between 30 and 60 degrees latitude, that separates cold polar air from warmer tropical air. This zone is characterized by strong horizontal temperature gradients and contains the polar front and the polar-front jet stream. The majority of extratropical cyclones, which drive weather patterns for much of the globe, form and intensify within this zone.
