Loop rating
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007049
A stage-discharge relationship for a river that forms a loop pattern during the passage of a flood wave, rather than following a single, unique curve. For any given water level (stage), the flow rate is higher on the rising limb of the flood hydrograph compared to the falling limb. This effect is caused by the changing slope of the water surface, which is steeper as the flood crest approaches and gentler as it recedes.
