Mean low water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001666

  1. The average height of all low tides observed over a specific period, typically 19 years, which constitutes a full tidal epoch. This tidal datum is used for charting and for defining the boundary between land and water in coastal areas. It represents a long-term average, smoothing out daily and seasonal variations.

  2. (MLW) - A tidal datum. The average of all the low water heights observed over the National Tidal Datum Epoch. For stations with shorter series, simultaneous observational comparisons are made with a control tide station in order to derive the equivalent datum of the National Tidal Datum Epoch.
