Orographic rainfall
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007739
Rainfall that occurs when moist air is forced to rise over mountains, leading to adiabatic cooling, condensation, and the formation of rain. This process is a major contributor to precipitation totals in many mountainous areas worldwide. The intensity and distribution of orographic rainfall are influenced by mountain height, slope, and prevailing wind direction.
