Orographic storm

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007741

A weather disturbance characterized by heavy precipitation, typically rain or snow, that is intensified or triggered by the forced ascent of moist air over mountainous terrain. As air rises over the mountains, it cools, condenses, and releases moisture, leading to enhanced precipitation on the windward slopes. These storms are a major source of precipitation in many mountain ranges worldwide.
