Q burst
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008229
A large transient in the extremely low frequency radio background caused by an exceptionally strong lightning discharge. It excites the Schumann resonances of the Earth-ionosphere cavity, so the pulse rings at frequencies of about 8, 14 and 20 Hz, and it stands out clearly against the noise from ordinary global lightning. Q bursts are used to locate major lightning sources and to study the cavity.
