Rain stage

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008370

The phase in the development of precipitation within a mixed-phase cloud where ice crystals grow at the expense of supercooled water droplets. Through the Bergeron-Findeisen process, water vapor sublimates onto the ice crystals, causing them to grow large enough to overcome updrafts and fall as precipitation. This stage is a key part of precipitation formation in mid-latitude cold clouds.
