Residual mass curve
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008527
A graphical representation of the cumulative departure of a time series from its long-term mean, used in hydrology and climatology. For a series like monthly rainfall, each point on the curve is the sum of all prior deviations from the average, plotting cumulative surplus or deficit over time. The slope of the curve indicates periods of above-average (positive slope) or below-average (negative slope) conditions, making it a tool for identifying droughts and wet spells.
