Retarded flow

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008546

A fluid motion characterized by a decrease in velocity over time or along a streamline. In the atmosphere, wind decelerates when it moves from a region of lower pressure to higher pressure or when it encounters increased surface friction, such as moving from sea to land. This deceleration is associated with horizontal convergence of the wind field, which can lead to upward vertical motion and cloud formation.
