Ship motion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008844
The movement of a vessel at sea in response to forces from waves, wind, and currents. This motion is described by six degrees of freedom: three rotational (roll, pitch, yaw) and three translational (heave, surge, sway). The magnitude of ship motion is a primary factor in determining passenger comfort, cargo safety, and the accuracy of onboard meteorological instruments, which require stabilization to produce reliable data.
