Heave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006203
The upward movement of the ground surface caused by the expansion of water freezing within the soil, a process known as frost heaving. This phenomenon occurs in cold regions where soil temperatures drop below freezing, leading to the formation of ice lenses that grow and push the overlying soil and objects upward. The magnitude of the heave depends on soil type, water availability, and the rate of freezing, with silty soils being particularly susceptible.
