Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004082

A floating platform, either moored or drifting, equipped with sensors to collect and transmit meteorological and oceanographic data. These automated weather stations measure atmospheric pressure, air and sea surface temperature, wind speed and direction, and wave height and period. Data from buoys are transmitted via satellite to weather forecasting centers and are foundational for marine forecasts and climate monitoring.
