Ocean weather station
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007664
A stationary or semi-stationary platform, such as a ship or buoy, located at a specific point in the ocean to collect and transmit meteorological and oceanographic data. These stations provide continuous, long-term observations of surface weather, upper-air conditions via radiosondes, and sea-surface and subsurface ocean properties. The international Ocean Weather Ship network was most active from the 1940s to the 1970s, with some stations continuing operation for decades.
