Buoyancy

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000389

  1. The upward force exerted by a fluid that opposes the weight of an immersed object, or in atmospheric science, the upward force experienced by an air parcel that is less dense than its surroundings. This force drives vertical motion in the atmosphere, such as in convective clouds or thermals. It is directly proportional to the density difference between the parcel and the ambient air.

  2. The tendency of a body to float or to rise when submerged in a fluid; the power of a fluid to exert an upward force on a body placed in it.
