Short-crested wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008853
An ocean wave characterized by a crest length that is comparable to or shorter than its wavelength, appearing as a choppy and irregular sea surface. These waves are typically generated by local winds that are variable in direction or by the superposition of multiple wave systems traveling in different directions. They contrast with long-crested waves, which have crests extending for many wavelengths.
