Wavelength

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003046

  1. The distance between identical points on successive cycles of a wave, such as from one crest to the next or one trough to the next. This measurement quantifies the spatial extent of a single oscillation for any propagating wave, including electromagnetic radiation or atmospheric waves. For electromagnetic radiation traveling in a vacuum, wavelength is equal to the speed of light divided by the wave's frequency.

  2. Distance between crests or troughs of a wave.
