Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008872
A characteristic pattern or set of features in meteorological data that indicates a specific weather phenomenon or atmospheric process. For example, a hook echo on a radar display is a signature for a tornadic supercell, while specific temperature and moisture profiles in a sounding indicate atmospheric instability. These patterns are used by forecasters to identify and predict weather events with greater confidence.
