Spit

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009149

An elongated, narrow ridge of sand or shingle that projects from the land into a body of water, such as a sea or lake. Spits are depositional landforms created by the process of longshore drift, where waves and currents driven by prevailing winds transport sediment along the coastline. The feature's growth continues in the direction of the dominant drift until it terminates in open water, often curving inward to form a hook if currents or wave patterns change.
