Stokes's drift

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009268

The net forward transport of fluid particles in a wave, even though the wave itself may not be translating. This phenomenon occurs because particles move faster at the crest of a wave than in the trough, resulting in a small but persistent displacement in the direction of wave propagation. It is a non-linear effect that contributes to ocean currents and the transport of surface pollutants.
