Stokes wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009267

A non-linear wave solution for water waves on the surface of an incompressible, inviscid fluid, representing a more accurate description than linear wave theory for waves of finite amplitude. These waves are characterized by a sharper crest and a flatter trough, and particles in the fluid exhibit a net forward drift. They are relevant for understanding ocean surface waves, especially in deep water.
