Stokes's drift velocity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009269

The net displacement of a fluid parcel over one wave period in a progressive wave, even though the wave itself does not transport mass. This phenomenon arises because the orbital paths of fluid particles are not perfectly closed circles, but rather slightly open ellipses. The drift is generally in the direction of wave propagation and decreases exponentially with depth.
