The dispersion of liquid droplets that occurs when a raindrop or other liquid impact a surface. In meteorology, this phenomenon is relevant to the erosion of soil by rainfall and the generation of aerosols from ocean spray. The size and velocity of the impacting droplet, along with the surface properties, influence the characteristics of the splash.
