Stem flow

The portion of precipitation that flows down the trunks or stems of plants to the ground. This process diverts water from directly reaching the soil surface or evaporating from leaves. Stem flow can significantly concentrate water at the base of trees, influencing soil moisture distribution and nutrient cycling.
