Subsurface flow
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009356
The movement of water beneath the Earth's surface within the unsaturated zone (vadose zone) and the saturated zone (groundwater). This process includes both interflow, which is the lateral movement of water in the unsaturated zone, and baseflow from the saturated groundwater zone. Subsurface flow is a slower contributor to streamflow compared to surface runoff but provides a more sustained water supply to streams, especially during dry periods.
