Symmetric instability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009467
A condition in the atmosphere where a parcel of air, when displaced slantwise along an isentropic surface, experiences buoyancy forces that accelerate it further in that direction. This instability arises when the atmosphere is conditionally unstable to slantwise displacements, even if it is stable to purely vertical displacements. It often leads to the formation of banded precipitation features.
