Thermodynamic speed limit

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009607

The theoretical upper limit on the wind speed of an intense vortex such as a tornado, set by the buoyant energy available to the storm. For a tornado it is the speed obtained by converting all convective available potential energy, CAPE, into kinetic energy, the square root of twice the CAPE. Simulated and radar-observed tornado winds sometimes exceed it by tens of percent.
