Thermodynamics
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002789
The branch of physics that deals with heat and its relation to other forms of energy and work, and the laws governing these relationships. In meteorology, it applies to understanding atmospheric processes such as cloud formation, precipitation, and the transfer of energy within the climate system. The first and second laws of thermodynamics are particularly relevant to atmospheric science.
In general, the relationships between heat and other properties (such as temperature, pressure, density, etc.) In forecast discussions, thermodynamics usually refers to the distribution of temperature and moisture (both vertical and horizontal) as related to the diagnosis of atmospheric instability.
