First law of thermodynamics
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000976
A fundamental principle stating that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another. In atmospheric science, this law is applied to air parcels, where changes in internal energy are balanced by heat added to the parcel and work done by or on the parcel. It forms the basis for understanding temperature changes in rising and sinking air.
The law of physics that states that the heat absorbed by a system either raises the internal energy of the system or does work on the environment.
