Traveling wave tube

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009778

A specialized vacuum tube that amplifies high-frequency radio signals by converting the kinetic energy of an electron beam into electromagnetic energy as both travel along a helical structure. This device provides high power gain over a broad bandwidth. Traveling wave tubes are used as the final power amplifier in the transmitters of many modern weather radar systems and in communication and remote sensing satellites that gather atmospheric data.
