An acronym for Very Low Frequency, referring to electromagnetic waves with frequencies ranging from 3 to 30 kilohertz. These waves have long wavelengths and can penetrate seawater to some extent, making them useful for submarine communication. In atmospheric science, VLF signals can be affected by ionospheric disturbances.
