Water-stage recorder

An instrument that continuously measures and records the height of a water surface in a river, lake, or well. It typically uses a float in a stilling well connected to a mechanical or electronic recording device that logs the water level over time. The resulting data record, called a hydrograph, is used for flood forecasting, water supply management, and hydrologic research.
