API unit

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000159

A unit of the American Petroleum Institute for gamma ray and neutron logs, defined by calibration in the API test pits at the University of Houston, Texas. The gamma ray API unit is one two-hundredth of the log deflection between a low-activity and a high-activity zone in the pit, and the neutron API unit sets the reading in a 19 percent porosity limestone at 1000. Caliper logs are recorded in inches and acoustic logs in microseconds per foot.
