An existing oil or gas field that is in the middle or later stages of its productive life, characterized by declining production rates and aging infrastructure. Development in a brownfield focuses on maintaining or increasing production through activities like infill drilling, workovers, and implementing enhanced oil recovery projects. This contrasts with a greenfield, which is a new discovery with no prior development and requires the installation of all new facilities.
