Brownian motion
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000471
The random, erratic movement of microscopic particles suspended in a fluid, resulting from continuous collisions with the much smaller, fast-moving molecules of the fluid itself. In reservoir engineering, this phenomenon contributes to the diffusion of tracers and components within reservoir fluids, particularly in static or very low-flow conditions. The mathematical description of this motion provides a basis for models of molecular diffusion, which is a key transport mechanism in enhanced oil recovery processes.
