An abbreviation for heavy-weight drill pipe, a type of tubular with thicker walls than standard drill pipe but thinner walls than drill collars. It serves as a transitional component in the drill string between the stiff drill collars and the more flexible drill pipe, and also provides weight on bit in some drilling applications. HWDP has the same joint connections as standard drill pipe of the same nominal size.
