Mud motor
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002453
A downhole positive displacement motor that converts the hydraulic energy of drilling fluid into mechanical energy to rotate the drill bit. It consists of a helical rotor that turns inside a lobed, rubber-lined stator as mud is pumped through the assembly, allowing the bit to turn independently of the drill string. Mud motors are a primary component of steerable systems for directional drilling and operate at speeds from 60 to over 200 revolutions per minute.
