Rotary steerable system
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003199
A downhole steering tool for directional drilling that changes the wellbore direction while the whole drill string keeps rotating from the surface. It steers either by pushing pads against the borehole wall (push-the-bit) or by bending an internal shaft to tilt the bit (point-the-bit), and the driller sends commands from the surface. In contrast, a steerable mud motor changes direction only in sliding mode, with the drill string held non-rotating.
