melphalan

Term · Oncology and biomedicine · MLC-T-ONC-005238

  1. A drug used to treat multiple myeloma and ovarian epithelial cancer that cannot be removed by surgery. It is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. Melphalan may kill cancer cells by damaging their DNA and stopping them from dividing. It is a type of alkylating agent. Also called Alkeran Tablets.

  2. A phenylalanine derivative of nitrogen mustard with antineoplastic activity. Melphalan alkylates DNA at the N7 position of guanine and induces DNA inter-strand cross-linkages, resulting in the inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis and cytotoxicity against both dividing and non-dividing tumor cells.
