Correlation energy

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002602

The difference between the exact non-relativistic energy of a quantum mechanical system and the energy calculated using the Hartree-Fock approximation. It accounts for the instantaneous electron-electron interactions that are not fully captured by the mean-field approximation of Hartree-Fock theory. This energy is always negative and represents the stabilization due to electron correlation.
