Genital fold

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004842

A paired embryonic ridge on either side of the cloacal membrane, also called the urethral fold, that develops differently in the two sexes. Under androgen influence the folds fuse in the midline to form the penile urethra and the ventral shaft of the penis, while without androgens they stay open and form the labia minora. The scrotum or labia majora arise instead from the neighbouring labioscrotal swellings.
