Longitudinal order
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006764
The order in the positions of atoms along the length of a linear polymer chain, which shows up as a regular repetition of the same conformation and spacing along the chain axis. A perfect helix or planar zigzag has complete longitudinal order, and fibre diffraction reveals it through layer lines set by the identity period. Lateral order, by contrast, describes how neighbouring chains pack side by side.
